They learn that art can be created anywhere at any time and in a variety of ways. Performances by cultural groups in the area are scheduled throughout the two days of the festival. These range from Chinese dragon parades to martial arts demonstrations to ethnic dance and music performances. Each artist goes through a juried process to ensure their art is unique, not mass produced, and the highest of quality. The artwork is judged at the festival and awards are issued to the artists. Additionally the festival supports their mission through the awarding of several financial scholarships to local high school students. These scholarships are awarded based on artwork submitted to the student art show that is also presented during the festival. The Carmel Art Tour, a fun and informal 90-minute guided walking tour, highlights beautiful Carmel art galleries and explores painting, sculpture, art glass and photography – from historic to contemporary – around downtown Carmel.

To show their commitment to identifying the Old Town area as the Arts & Design District, the City installed archways over the main entrances to the district. Eventually, flower baskets, flower boxes at windows, benches, out door sculptures and bump out curb dining complemented the experience in the district. Born and raised in Duluth, MN, the landscape around Lake Superior gave me a beautiful palette of water, sky and forest to inspire my work. I have lived in a number of places in the US over the years but the scenes from the Great Lakes region continue to be the main focus of my creativity.
The Carmel Arts & Design District received its cultural district certification in 2010 from the Indiana Arts Commission, who advocates for engaging with the arts to enrich the quality of individual and community life. The Magdalena Gallery of Art displays both traditional and modern works, but the gallery’s primary focus is contemporary art. Artists represented include internationally known artists, as well as local favorites in various stages of their careers. Owner and Mexican native Magdalena Hoyos-Segovia is an internationally known professional artist who had a lifelong dream to open her own gallery. Upon seeing the vision of the Carmel Arts & Design District, she and professional artist Mary Johnston opened the gallery in December 2006. Because of their talents, they are able to offer a variety of services and styles to the art buyer.

CCA Gallery & Gifts offers an extensive variety of unique art from painting in oil and acrylic, to pastel, pen & ink and woodcut prints; photography, ceramics, glass, wood (including furniture), jewelry, leather, fabric, weaving, gourds and more. For art collectors and art admirers, there’s nothing the Carmel galleries that feature the most exquisite and avant garde art work on display in the city. Because art is a subjective medium, every art lover can contact their local gallery to find out when their favorite artist or style of art will be on display. Many Carmel galleries also hold art sales and auctions, allowing aficionados the chance to take their favorite pieces home.
In 2021, Circle Real Estate acquired an iconic former fine art gallery on Main Street in the Carmel Arts & Design District to open their office. What they didn’t anticipate was the immediate interest from some of the region’s top contemporary artists in exhibiting their work. Besides presenting a pleasant gallery environment where you can visit and enjoy the exhibited work with the guidance of the artist, several Art On Main artists also take commission work to meet custom taste and design needs for both home and business. The Center provides performing arts experiences, learning opportunities and cultural enrichment through programs for children, teens, adults, schools, families and community partners. In the Young at Art section, children between the ages of two and twelve can do arts project on-site.

The idea of local artists bound by talent and perspective is the foundation that this community was built on. Carmel was once, and for many still is, a bohemian enclave--a haven for artists and a refuge for writers and intellectuals. While the artists and writers brought creative energy to town, the establishment of the Carmel Art Association gave it structure, stature, and sustenance. The second-oldest art cooperative in the country, it has defined the art community for 80 years. Throughout the redevelopment of this area, the City has used public private partnerships to encourage investment by the private sector in the area. The City identified the best areas for redevelopment, purchased and combined small lots and made them ready for development, and created a plan for the area so that the private sector could come in and begin work more easily.
It is the mission of the Carmel Arts Council to encourage and promote the arts for all ages through leadership, financial, and volunteer support in order to nourish a vibrant culture in the Carmel Community. The Children’s Art Gallery features artwork by kindergarten through 5th grade students, along with middle and high school art. The Carmel Public Art Collection exists to make art accessible to all residents and visitors. Public art enhances the City’s outdoor spaces and experiences while bringing people together.
